The Bank of Israel's Banking Supervision Department held a professional conference on banking fairness, using the event to frame fairness in banks' dealings with customers as a guiding principle of supervision and of the modern financial system. In remarks at the conference, Supervisor of Banks Daniel Hahiashvili said fairness is a fundamental principle in banking activity, that some existing processes in this area should be preserved while others need improvement, and that supervision will continue to monitor, initiate and act on banking fairness on an ongoing basis. The conference brought together legal, regulatory, economic and public perspectives on fairness in the banking system. Topics included the development of the concept of banking fairness, international policy and trends, the balance between business profitability and customer commitments, the role of law and regulation in setting fairness standards, and public perceptions of the fairness of the banking system. Speakers included Hahiashvili, Supreme Court Justice Professor Ofer Grosskopf, and senior participants from regulation, banking, law, communications and academia. The department described the event as part of a broader effort to strengthen fairness in the banking system.
