The New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) announced a partnership with the New York State Police to run a specialized training symposium designed to strengthen statewide capabilities to detect, investigate, and prosecute financial crimes, including auto insurance fraud. The programme will train 250 law enforcement personnel, including State Police investigators and troopers and representatives from local agencies across New York State. The symposium is slated for July at the New York State Police Academy in Albany and will cover financial crimes and multiple categories of insurance fraud, including auto insurance, as well as investigations involving deceptive contractors and elder fraud. Training is set to include an overview of relevant insurance fraud statutes, case studies, and practical instruction from the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Financial Crimes and Special Investigation Units on core investigative techniques. The initiative builds on ongoing work between the State Police Financial Crimes Unit and the DFS Insurance Frauds Bureau, against a backdrop of 43,811 suspected motor vehicle insurance fraud incidents reported to DFS in 2025, up from 24,238 in 2020. Upon completion of the initial training session, the specialized training block will be permanently incorporated into the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation school curriculum for future investigators.
