The Central Bank of Montenegro issued a statement after a 19 May 2025 vote in the Parliament of Montenegro in which its candidates for vice-governors did not receive support, stressing that appointments to vice-governor and Council roles must be based on professionalism, integrity and credibility to protect the bank’s independence under the Constitution of Montenegro and the Central Bank of Montenegro Law. The central bank said it had nominated Gordana Kalezić and Milan Remiković for vice-governor positions in August 2024 and that no arguments had been presented against their appointment, framing the outcome as a step backwards for the institution’s full functionality and for institutional independence standards referenced in EU-related economic and financial dialogue conclusions. It added that, under Governor Irena Radović, it would continue to carry out its mandate within the legal framework, with a focus on preserving monetary and financial stability and confidence in Montenegro’s financial system.
