The Bank of Albania published Governor Gent Sejko’s welcome address to the 5th Conference of the Museum of the Bank of Albania, held as a commemorative event for the central bank’s 100th anniversary and as a forum to link Albania’s monetary history with forward-looking policy questions. In the remarks, Sejko traced three broad phases of central banking in Albania, from early post-independence efforts and the establishment of the National Bank of Albania in 1925, through the post-World War II period of a planned and largely closed economy, to the early-1990s transition to the modern and independent Bank of Albania with international integration and a mandate centred on price, financial and macroeconomic stability. He also referenced recent museum and research work drawing on archival material to deepen institutional memory, and positioned Albania’s European Union integration as a driver for aligning policies and practices with European standards. Looking ahead, he cited digital currency, climate risks, artificial intelligence and financial innovation as key forces reshaping the financial landscape and framed the conference as a venue to broaden dialogue on these issues alongside historical research.
