The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued a public alert about phishing instant messages related to Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia) Limited, following reports received by the HKMA and referencing the bank’s own press release. The HKMA reminded the public that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to conduct transactions, nor request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or One-Time Passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded hyperlinks. It advised anyone who provided personal information or carried out financial transactions in response to the messages to contact the bank using the details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre.
