The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a remission compensation process to distribute forfeited assets to victims of the OneCoin cryptocurrency investment fraud. Victims who purchased the fraudulent OneCoin cryptocurrency between 2014 and 2019 may be eligible to seek compensation, with petition filings due by June 30. OneCoin was marketed globally through a multi-level-marketing network and, according to the Department, misrepresentations led victims to invest more than USD 4 billion worldwide. The Department brought multiple OneCoin-related prosecutions in the Southern District of New York, several key figures have been sentenced, and criminal forfeiture proceedings have resulted in more than USD 40 million being available for victim compensation. The Criminal Division’s Money Laundering, Narcotics and Forfeiture Section is managing the remission process, with Kroll Settlement Administration LLC serving as the remission administrator, and the Department cautioned that neither it nor the administrator will request payment to participate.
