The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced that General Counsel Megan Barbero will leave the agency on 20 January 2025, ending a tenure in the role that began in February 2023. Barbero joined the SEC in July 2021 as Principal Deputy General Counsel. As the Commission’s chief legal officer, Barbero advised on legal and policy issues across the SEC’s agenda, supported rulemakings and enforcement actions, and represented the Commission in major litigation, including appeals and Supreme Court matters. Before joining the SEC, she served as Deputy General Counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives and worked on the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Appellate staff, as well as in private practice.

Before her SEC role, she held positions with the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Department of Justice.
