The National Bank of Denmark published May 2026 banking and mortgage credit statistics showing that Danish households’ mortgage debt and housing debt in banks rose by DKK 39.2 billion in the first five months of 2026, bringing total housing debt to DKK 2,076 billion. Mortgage debt, which makes up the largest share of household housing finance, increased by DKK 31 billion, or 1.8%, while housing debt in banks rose by DKK 8.1 billion, or 2.6%. The increase in bank housing debt was largely driven by mortgage-like bank loans, known as prioritetslån, which the central bank said have become more widely used in Danish housing finance in recent years. These loans are similar to mortgage loans in many respects, but differ in that pricing depends to a greater extent on individual customer characteristics. The figures cover outstanding housing-related debt at nominal value for households resident in Denmark at the end of the reference period.
