De Nederlandsche Bank has released new statistics for the first time that measure the securities holdings of the overall Dutch economy, showing that Dutch firms, institutions and households collectively held EUR 3,487 billion of securities at year-end 2024, equivalent to 308% of gross domestic product. The dataset provides monthly holdings by sector, including non-financial corporations, banks, other financial institutions, institutional investors and households, and breaks them down by security type and issuer geography. Debt securities accounted for more than EUR 1,383 billion, with EUR 1,123 billion in investment fund shares and nearly EUR 980 billion in listed equities; institutional investors held over 68% of total securities, while banks held more than 9% and other financial institutions just under 11%. By issuer location, EUR 1,338 billion (38%) was invested in Dutch-issued securities, EUR 800 billion (23%) in other euro area issuers and EUR 1,349 billion (39%) outside the euro area; listed equity holdings were concentrated in non-euro area issuers (74%), largely in US firms such as NVIDIA, Apple and Microsoft. The statistics are compiled from reports submitted by financial institutions, applying sector-specific reporting thresholds and not extrapolating for non-reporters, which means the results can differ from other macroeconomic statistics produced by De Nederlandsche Bank and Statistics Netherlands. Some breakdowns are withheld for confidentiality, and De Nederlandsche Bank will chart these holdings on an ongoing monthly basis through its tables and dashboard.
