The Central Bank of Montenegro, alongside the Government of Montenegro and the Delegation of the European Union in Montenegro, marked the launch of the first Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) transactions from Montenegro, signalling the country’s operational entry into the European payments infrastructure. With Montenegrin banks now participating in SEPA alongside EU member states, citizens and businesses can send and receive euro payments to and from SEPA countries under the same rules and conditions, with the Central Bank of Montenegro highlighting faster, secure and lower-cost transactions. ECB President Christine Lagarde noted that all 11 banks in Montenegro are now part of SEPA, and the Central Bank of Montenegro described the move as effectively integrating the national banking sector into the SEPA network, which includes over 3,900 payment service providers across 41 countries.
