The Central Bank of Malta reported that Governor Professor Edward Scicluna addressed a high-level conference marking the 100th anniversary of the Bank of Albania and joined a panel on “The Evolving Challenges of Monetary Policy”, alongside central bankers, senior policymakers and academics. The conference theme, “A century of central banking: From institutional foundation to regional anchor”, covered geo-economic fragmentation and trade reconfiguration, and the complex environment Europe faces while remaining a focus for political, social and economic convergence. Participants also discussed the implications of central bank digital currencies, stablecoins and new payment infrastructures for monetary sovereignty, financial stability and inclusion, as well as monetary policy challenges around credibility, anchoring expectations and achieving price stability in a volatile world. The panel session examined persistent inflationary pressures, geopolitical tensions, technological change in financial services, and the growing importance of communication and transparency in central bank operations; opening speeches were delivered by Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde and Bank of Albania Governor Gent Sejko.
