Slovakia's Ministry of Finance has published a notice that QR code payments became available in Slovakia from 1 April 2026 as a new cashless payment method. At the point of sale, the merchant generates a QR code through the cash register containing the payment details, the customer scans it and confirms the transaction, and the funds are credited to the merchant's account within seconds with immediate confirmation for both parties. Merchants must make QR code payment available to all customers and cannot refuse a request to use it, while customers are not required to pay this way and retain the right to pay in cash or by any other contactless method the merchant accepts. The ministry said the system was developed with the Financial Administration, the banking sector and technology partners, is accessible through banks' mobile applications, and can be implemented by businesses free of charge with state support. It also presented the measure as a way to reduce merchants' payment acceptance costs, avoid investment in payment terminals, simplify sales recording, and improve transparency for tax collection and anti-shadow-economy efforts.
