The Financial and Consumer Services Commission of New Brunswick published an awareness notice ahead of Unclaimed Property Day on February 1, encouraging New Brunswickers to search its FundsFinderNB.ca portal for unclaimed money and monetary property. The Commission estimates more than 33,000 people in the province have claimable assets, with more than CAD 33 million currently waiting to be claimed. To date, 463 people have been reunited with more than CAD 2.1 million, covering items such as funds forgotten in credit union accounts, uncashed cheques, investment accounts and security deposits. Businesses and other organizations holding unclaimed funds must make annual efforts to reach owners and, if owners do not respond, report the property through FundsFinderNB.ca during the yearly reporting period from January 1 to March 31; property is generally considered unclaimed after at least three years of inactivity, or 10 years for credit union accounts. The Commission also noted that New Brunswick’s database has been linked to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators’ MissingMoney.com website to support cross-jurisdiction searches.
