The Central Bank of Jordan’s ninth annual payment system report shows record growth in digital payments during 2024, with electronic channels accounting for 84% of all payments in Jordan and cash transactions shrinking to 16%. Growth was driven by a 148% increase in payment orders executed through the instant payment system to 140.7 million, with a total value of JOD 17.3bn. Electronic bill payments via eFAWATEERcom rose 26% to 66.1 million orders worth more than JOD 12.6bn, while card-based electronic payment transactions reached 350 million with a total value of more than JOD 25bn. The report also cites JOD 600m in e-commerce electronic payments and an expansion in merchant acceptance infrastructure to more than 93,000 points of sale; the Governor linked the shift to the National Strategy for Electronic Payments 2023-2025 and development of an electronic documentation system for the financial and banking sector.
