The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a public alert after The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited reported to it a fraudulent website, and the HKMA linked to the bank’s related press release. The HKMA reminded the public that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to banks’ websites to carry out transactions, and will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS. It advised anyone who provided personal information or conducted financial transactions via the website to contact the bank using the contact details in the bank’s press release and report the matter to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre.
