The New Brunswick Financial & Consumer Services Commission issued a consumer alert warning of an impersonation scam on social media that uses a fake news article to claim Premier Susan Holt is endorsing the cryptocurrency trading platform CanCap. The Commission stated that CanCap is not registered to deal or advise in securities in New Brunswick and is not on the list of registered crypto trading platforms. The alert describes a fake article designed to resemble a Telegraph-Journal webpage, including a fabricated interview transcript with CBC’s Ian Hanomansing and doctored images, and making false claims that the “provincial investment program” is supported by the provincial government, backed by the Bank of Canada’s new digital currency, and offers “zero risk” returns supported by falsified bank statements. The Commission also noted a growing trend of scammers using generative AI to personalize pitches, and said it issued Caution List entries for the CanCap platform referenced in the article, another website using the name “CanCap”, and three identical websites branded CanCap, Immediate Flectinium and CanCentra, none of which are registered in New Brunswick.
