The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) has inaugurated its third auxiliary branch in Mali, opening a new office in Kayes following earlier openings in Mopti and Sikasso. The launch forms part of the BCEAO’s programme to expand its branch network, aimed at strengthening access to banking and financial inclusion while improving the circulation of cash. The inauguration was presided over by Mali’s Minister of Economy and Finance, representing the President of the Transition and Head of State, and brought together senior officials including the President of the Council of Ministers of the West African Monetary Union, Mali’s Minister of Industry and Trade, and representatives of the banking and financial system. The BCEAO cited Kayes’ economic potential as a key factor in the location choice, pointing to strong mining activity, hydroelectric dams, significant financial flows linked to the diaspora, and the region’s role as a strategic hub for trade and food supply from Senegal, alongside its agricultural, mining and agropastoral production.
