The Thailand Office of Insurance Commission announced a joint effort with Apple and Google to identify and remove mobile applications that fraudulently sell insurance in Thailand without the required authorisations, after detecting cases of unlicensed foreign entities using apps to pose as insurers and solicit policies from the public. Working with the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, and alongside the Electronic Transactions Development Agency, the Personal Data Protection Committee, the Fiscal Policy Office and the Bank of Thailand, the Office will review and delete apps linked to insurers not licensed to conduct insurance business in Thailand and to individuals or entities acting as insurance agents or brokers without a licence. It reiterated that insurers must be licensed by the Minister of Finance and that agents and brokers must be licensed by the registrar, and warned that unauthorised providers fall outside its supervision, creating risks such as unpaid or incomplete claims and limited legal recourse where providers have no assets in Thailand. The Office also urged consumers to verify that insurers and intermediaries are properly licensed using its official channels before purchasing insurance.
