The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina has published instructions reminding citizens and businesses how to replace withdrawn convertible mark banknotes in denominations of BAM 10, BAM 20, BAM 50 and BAM 100 issued between 1998 and 2009, which ceased to be legal tender on 31 December 2024. Replacement remains available through commercial banks in Bosnia and Herzegovina until 31 December 2025, after which exchanges will be handled by the central bank from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2035. From 2026, exchanges will take place on working days from 10:00 to 14:00 at the CBBH Cash Management Department in Sarajevo (Head Office) and Banja Luka (Main Bank of Republika Srpska). Any natural or legal person may apply, but the central bank will only replace banknotes that are whole, authentic and show no signs of damage or discolouration. Applicants exchanging less than BAM 5,000 must present an official identity document; exchanges of BAM 5,000 or more require submission of a dedicated application form, and amounts of BAM 20,000 or more require advance notification at least 48 hours before arrival. Replacement is typically completed in a single appointment, but for larger amounts and/or where conditions need to be assessed the central bank may take up to 60 days to determine whether authenticity has been confirmed and whether the applicant has provided complete information and plausible statements on the origin of the cash; a Payment Certificate is issued after completion and is not evidence of the money’s origin.
