The Central Bank of Costa Rica announced that series A and B of the CRC 1,000 banknote will cease to be valid as a means of payment from 1 November 2025. From that date, these notes must be exchanged or deposited through financial institutions, while the series C CRC 1,000 banknote remains in circulation as a means of payment. The central bank stressed that series A and B will lose only their payment function, not their monetary value, so holders can still redeem them via exchange or deposit at the financial institution where they hold an account. Redemption will remain available indefinitely; depending on the amount presented, banks may require completion of a form under Law 8204 on drugs, money laundering and terrorism financing. Series A and B have been in circulation since 2011 and 2016 respectively, and the central bank reported that 94% of the series A and B notes issued have already been withdrawn via financial institutions, mainly due to wear that prevents identification of security features.
