The Central Bank of Bolivia (BCB) published a wrap-up of the 18th Meeting of Economists of Bolivia on the digital economy, highlighting the challenge of deepening digital ecosystems and laying the foundations for normative and regulatory frameworks. In closing remarks, acting president Edwin Rojas Ulo confirmed that the central bank is assessing the feasibility of issuing a central bank digital currency (CBDC). The feasibility work covers technical, legal and operational aspects and is framed as a way to strengthen the payments system and extend the benefits of digital money to the wider population, rather than replacing cash or abruptly altering the national financial structure. The event in Santa Cruz de la Sierra brought together ten international experts, and the BCB said the presentations and research papers discussed will inform further analysis on a potential digital currency and on the development of digital assets in Bolivia. The initiative is expected to start with the presentation of an “Initial Diagnosis for the Issuance of a Digital Currency of the Central Bank of Bolivia”.
