Norges Bank has published four reports from its work on digital central bank money (DSP), setting out the assessments behind its conclusion that there is currently no basis to introduce DSP in Norway, while noting that this could become relevant in the future. The project formed part of Norges Bank’s 2023–2025 strategy and aimed to provide a decision basis for whether the central bank should issue DSP and, if so, in what form and with what characteristics. The publications cover the final report from project phase 5, an assessment of potential consequences for Norway of a digital euro, results from experimental testing in phase 5, and analysis of tokenised bank deposits, wholesale CBDC and the implications for the central bank’s liquidity management. Further work will continue on tokenisation and different forms of DSP, including experimental technology testing and collaboration with other payments-system participants, to ensure readiness if DSP becomes necessary.
