The National Bank of Ethiopia, working with the Gambella Regional State Government, the Financial Inclusion Council, NewFin and the United Nations Capital Development Fund, has launched the first Annual Financial Literacy Week, running from 27–31 October 2025, as a nationwide campaign starting in the Gambella Region. The initiative is themed “Fostering Financial Literacy and Strengthening Consumer Protection” and targets improved financial decision-making, with particular emphasis on digital literacy and women in rural areas. Annual Financial Literacy Week is being delivered as part of the National Financial Education Strategy that the National Bank of Ethiopia has led since 2021, including campaigns aimed at rural women and youth implemented with financial institutions, government bodies and development partners. Activities during the week include branch-level displays of educational materials, community engagement, and awareness messaging through roadshows, SMS, brochures, mass media and social media, alongside workshops and community discussions in Gambella City; the programme aims to reach around three million adults nationwide, 50% of whom are women, with education on the benefits of opening and using mobile money accounts.
