The Central Bank of Lesotho has launched an upgraded sixth series of Maloti banknotes, introducing a redesigned family intended to modernise the currency while strengthening anti-counterfeiting protection, improving durability and supporting accessibility features for users. Key changes include printing the M50, M100 and M200 denominations on a hybrid composite substrate combining polyester resilience with a cotton-like feel, while the M10 and M20 remain cotton-based but are reinforced with a sisal thread. Security enhancements include advanced security threads, with a rolling star thread on higher denominations that shifts between “CBL” and the denomination when tilted, and an Anima thread on lower denominations that appears as a broken line but looks continuous when viewed against the light. The series also adds distinct tactile lines and raised printing to help visually impaired users identify denominations, and retains national symbols such as portraits of the Kings and the Mokorotlo hat, alongside the signature of the current Governor. Earlier Maloti banknote families will remain legal tender and circulate alongside the new series until they are officially withdrawn through a legal notice.
