Global Finance magazine’s 2025 Central Banker Report Cards awarded Mamo Mihretu, former Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, an A- grade, described as the highest rating achieved by an Ethiopian central banker. The annual scorecard assesses central bank governors from more than 100 countries on inflation control, economic growth, currency stability, interest rate management, and policy independence. The report links the rating to reforms pursued during Mihretu’s January 2023 to September 2025 term, including a shift toward market-based exchange rate mechanisms, tighter monetary policy aimed at reducing inflationary pressures, modernisation of financial oversight to enhance transparency, and steps to open Ethiopia’s banking sector to foreign investors. In the Africa rankings, Kamau Thugge of Kenya and Abdellatif Jouahri of Morocco received an A grade, while Mihretu, Lesetja Kganyago of South Africa, Michael Atingi-Ego of Uganda and Hassan Abdalla of Egypt were rated A-. Mihretu stepped down on 3 September 2025 and was succeeded by Dr Eyob Tekalign, a former State Minister of Finance.
