Tanzania's Ministry of Finance has delivered public financial education in Tarime District, calling on residents to report any unregistered microfinance service providers operating outside the law. The ministry framed the message as part of helping citizens understand their rights when using financial services and distinguish legitimate providers from illegal ones. The outreach covered Manga, Sirari, Matombo, Nyamwaga, Ganyange and Gorong’a in Tarime District Council, with officials warning that illegal and improper financial service providers can undermine household welfare and local development. Participants were also encouraged to manage income from lawful economic activity carefully, avoid non-productive spending such as ceremonies, and instead save or invest in options such as collective investment schemes and Government bonds; the ministry cited FinScope 2023 findings that only 53.5% of the labour force used formal financial services. The public financial education programme began in May 2024 and has reached 15 regions so far, with Mwanza identified as the next region for the rollout.
