The National Bank of Serbia issued a public warning telling citizens not to borrow from, or provide payment card details to, the company Neo Tist, which is presenting itself as a “modern bank” and advertising a broad set of financial services despite not being licensed or supervised by the central bank. Neo Tist has been promoting services including commission-free cash withdrawal, payment card transactions, deposits, consumer and housing loans, foreign exchange operations, brokerage services and insurance, and has reportedly asked customers to “authenticate” payment data to use internet banking. The National Bank of Serbia stressed that it supervises only institutions it has licensed and cannot protect consumers’ rights and interests when dealing with unlicensed providers, warning of a heightened risk of abuse. It urged citizens to use banking services only from legally authorised institutions, and to inform the Ministry of the Interior if they become aware of illegal provision of banking services such as accepting deposits, granting loans or issuing payment cards, which it noted is a criminal offence.
