The National Bank of Moldova published updated statistics on turnover in Moldova’s non-cash foreign exchange market, covering banks’ purchases and sales against the Moldovan leu and excluding transactions conducted by the central bank. The release distinguishes between the interbank market (transactions between commercial banks) and the intrabank market (transactions between banks and their clients), and reports volumes for SPOT, SWAP and FORWARD operations. For SPOT transactions, interbank turnover totalled EUR 17,081.6 thousand in purchases and EUR 27,300.0 thousand in sales, all reported in euro. In the intrabank segment, SPOT turnover totalled EUR 367,294.16 thousand in purchases and EUR 575,415.9 thousand in sales, driven mainly by US dollar purchases of EUR 145,139.1 thousand and sales of EUR 210,824.9 thousand, and euro purchases of EUR 212,445.1 thousand and sales of EUR 330,871.2 thousand; smaller volumes were reported in Russian rouble, Romanian leu, British pound, Swiss franc and other currencies. SWAP activity was limited to interbank euro transactions of EUR 96.8 thousand in both purchases and sales, while FORWARD activity was reported as intrabank euro purchases of EUR 1,700.0 thousand. The figures are calculated from banks’ reports on foreign currency bought and sold against the Moldovan leu submitted under the regulation governing the official exchange rate, with operations recorded on the transaction date and converted into euro using monthly average exchange rates. SWAP volumes are calculated using a daily weighted-average method based on transaction tenor, and the statistics are published monthly by the last day of the month following the reporting month.
