Euro area finance ministers meeting in the Eurogroup have nominated Croatian National Bank Governor Boris Vujcic to become the next Vice-President of the European Central Bank. The appointment is expected to take effect on 1 June 2026, subject to endorsement by the European Council, when the current Vice-President Luis de Guindos’ term expires. The nomination triggers the appointment process under Article 283(2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, including a European Parliament Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs hearing and an opinion from the ECB Governing Council. The Croatian National Bank noted that, if confirmed, Vujcic would be the first person from Central and Eastern Europe to serve on the ECB Executive Board since its establishment. The procedure set out by the Croatian National Bank foresees the ECON hearing and ECB Governing Council opinion in February–March 2026, a European Parliament plenary opinion in March 2026, and a final European Council decision in March 2026, ahead of the planned start date of 1 June 2026.
