The Central Bank of the Bahamas issued a public notice warning about fake internet advertisements, videos, and social media posts using “deepfakes” to impersonate Central Bank officials and promote purported investment opportunities, and urged the public not to click associated links. The Central Bank stressed that, apart from purchases of Bahamas Government bonds, savings bonds and treasury bills, it does not offer loans, banking or other private investment services to the general public. It advised people to avoid sharing personal information or making payments to unknown individuals or companies, and noted that legitimate payments to the Central Bank can only be made via local commercial banks through secure, bank-verified channels. Official communications can be verified through the Central Bank’s website or official social media pages, and suspected scams should be reported to the Royal Bahamas Police Force and flagged on the relevant social media platforms.
