The National Bank of Georgia published remarks by Governor Natia Turnava at the IV International Consumer Protection Week, setting out the central bank’s consumer protection work and reviewing measures already implemented rather than announcing a new policy package. In her address, Turnava said that in 2025 specific consumer rights protection requirements were extended to payment service providers, which are now required to receive, process and respond to consumer claims within established timeframes and submit monthly reports on those claims to the National Bank of Georgia for systemic and individual analysis. She also reviewed the work of the Dispute Resolution Commission within the National Bank of Georgia for consumer disputes related to payment services. Over its two years of operation, 162 consumers appealed to the commission, 113 complaints were accepted for proceedings, about 80% of closed cases were resolved in favor of consumers, and providers have reimbursed more than GEL 400,000 in total. Turnava also pointed to financial education as part of consumer protection, including the National Bank of Georgia’s Finedu platform. The broader Consumer Protection Week runs from March 9 to 16 across Tbilisi, Gardabani, Gori, Batumi and Tskaltubo.
