The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) issued a public alert after Airstar Bank Limited reported a fraudulent social media account to the HKMA, and directed readers to Airstar Bank’s press release via a hyperlink on the HKMA website. The HKMA reminded the public that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to banks’ websites to carry out transactions, and will not ask for sensitive personal information such as login passwords or one-time passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded hyperlinks. Anyone who has provided personal information or conducted financial transactions through or in response to the account was advised to contact the bank using the contact information in Airstar Bank’s press release and to report the matter to the Police via the Crime Wing Information Centre.
