The Central Bank of Bolivia has launched a mobile application, Billetes de Bolivia, to allow the public to quickly verify the validity of Series B BOB 10, BOB 20 and BOB 50 banknotes by checking their serial numbers against an invalidated batch linked to a recent cargo aircraft accident. The app is free on the App Store and Google Play and works offline, enabling users to scan a banknote or manually enter its serial number. Only the 17.1 million notes transported on a Transporte Aéreo Boliviano Hercules C-130 (registration FAB-81) that crashed on 27 February have been disabled and individually identified by serial number, while the central bank emphasised that the vast majority of Series B notes in circulation remain legal tender and should not be rejected without verification. The mobile app complements an online verifier made available on the central bank’s website on 28 February. The central bank committed to develop additional verification mechanisms for older adults and people without access to technology, while the financial system and the central bank continue to identify and perforate invalid notes that reach their cash operations.
