The Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten has issued an alert over a significant increase in counterfeit NAf 100 banknotes circulating in Curaçao and advised the public to stop accepting NAf 100 notes immediately for the remainder of the co-circulation period ending July 1 2025. The Bank said the counterfeits are increasingly difficult to distinguish from genuine notes and have been presented with trimmed edges by individuals claiming the notes were damaged by fire. It urged anyone holding NAf 100 notes to have them checked for authenticity at its Scharloo office during business hours with valid identification, and noted it is working with police and judicial authorities to trace the source and prevent further distribution. The release also reminded the public that accepting or passing counterfeit money is prohibited and carries penalties of up to nine years’ imprisonment.
