The South African Reserve Bank published its statement of assets and liabilities as at 31 May 2025, reporting total assets (and total equity and liabilities) of ZAR 1.273 trillion, down ZAR 35.9 billion from April 2025. The decline was driven mainly by lower gold and foreign assets. Total gold and foreign assets fell by ZAR 36.4 billion to ZAR 1.218 trillion, reflecting decreases in foreign exchange reserves excluding special drawing rights (SDRs) (down ZAR 24.6 billion), SDR holdings (down ZAR 4.3 billion) and the rand value of gold (down ZAR 7.4 billion). The rand gold price declined to ZAR 58,869 per fine ounce from ZAR 60,673.62, while gold holdings edged down to 4,033,975 fine ounces. On the liabilities side, the gold and foreign exchange contingency reserve account decreased by ZAR 35.9 billion to ZAR 354.3 billion, while banks’ deposits increased by ZAR 15.1 billion to ZAR 339.0 billion.
