The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) issued an alert warning consumers and businesses to watch for fake or fraudulent documents that misuse FSRA’s name, letterhead and logo. FSRA said it has become aware of documents suggesting FSRA endorsed the release of funds between individuals, and urged recipients of suspicious documents or approaches by purported FSRA representatives to report the matter directly to FSRA. FSRA noted that fraudulent documents can closely mimic legitimate correspondence and may include what appear to be officials’ signatures, making them difficult to distinguish from genuine communications. It advised recipients to scrutinise documents for indicators such as spelling mistakes and inconsistencies in the organisation’s name, address or contact details, and to verify the legitimacy of the organisation and the document by conducting independent checks and contacting the organisation directly; it also pointed readers to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre for further guidance.
