HM Treasury announced an expanded push to reconnect young people with forgotten Child Trust Funds (CTFs), combining a renewed awareness campaign with targeted outreach by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to account holders whose funds remain unclaimed. CTFs were introduced in 2005 for children born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011, and the Government estimates there are over 750,000 unclaimed accounts worth GBP 2,200 on average. Alongside promotion of the free “Find My Child Trust Fund” service on GOV.UK, HMRC will write to all 21-year-olds with unclaimed CTFs to alert them to the account and encourage them to claim it, with 21 selected on the basis that most will have had recent contact with HMRC through PAYE or student finance, supporting up-to-date address records. The Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Lucy Rigby, also convened a roundtable with CTF providers to identify further steps and improve coordination between industry and government.
