Ireland's Department of Finance announced that the Government has agreed to nominate Gabriel Makhlouf for re-appointment by the President as Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland, with a second term due to commence on 1 September 2026. Makhlouf has served as Governor since 1 September 2019 and, in the role, chairs the Central Bank Commission and is a member of the European Central Bank’s Governing Council and the European Systemic Risk Board, as well as Ireland’s Alternate Governor at the International Monetary Fund. The Department set out that the President appoints the Governor on the advice of the Government under the Central Bank Act 1942 (as amended), and that the President may re-appoint an incumbent for a further seven-year period at the end of the current term.
