The Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC) has published a new Special Bulletin on money laundering associated with extortion directed at Canada’s South Asian diaspora, aimed at helping businesses subject to the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act identify relevant activity and file suspicious transaction reports and listed person or entity property reports. The bulletin is positioned as a response to extortion generating proceeds for organized crime that are laundered through the financial system, and as a tool to support both reporting entities’ detection and FINTRAC’s production of financial intelligence for law enforcement and national security investigations. FINTRAC reported that, since the beginning of 2026, it has generated more than 100 financial intelligence disclosures related to extortion for law enforcement agencies across Canada, exceeding the number of extortion-related disclosures in the past two years combined, with those disclosures identifying more than 300 subjects and covering over 63,000 financial transactions.
