The South African Reserve Bank published its monthly statement of assets and liabilities under section 32 of the South African Reserve Bank Act, reporting total assets of ZAR 1,261,678,044,921 as at 30 September 2025, down ZAR 41,706,368,050 from August 2025. Gold and foreign assets totalled ZAR 1,204,552,538,431, a decrease of ZAR 43,072,186,783, driven mainly by a ZAR 63,215,950,112 fall in foreign exchange reserves (excluding SDRs) to ZAR 825,522,348,824, partly offset by a ZAR 21,959,256,487 increase in gold to ZAR 265,699,599,965. On the liabilities side, notes and coin in circulation rose ZAR 385,340,740 to ZAR 173,270,885,462, while foreign loans and deposits from the South African government fell ZAR 36,800,950,615 to ZAR 52,685,012,708 and banks’ deposits declined ZAR 2,739,754,557 to ZAR 309,896,328,589; the gold and foreign exchange contingency reserve account increased ZAR 2,078,703,722 to ZAR 356,835,277,657. The statement also reported a gold price of ZAR 65,858.17 per fine ounce and gold holdings of 4,034,421 fine ounces.

South African Reserve Bank publishes September 2025 balance sheet showing ZAR 41.7bn fall in total assets
The South African Reserve Bank's monthly statement reported total assets of ZAR 1.26 trillion as of 30 September 2025, a decrease of ZAR 41.71 billion from August. Gold and foreign assets fell by ZAR 43.07 billion, mainly due to a ZAR 63.22 billion drop in foreign exchange reserves, partially offset by a ZAR 21.96 billion increase in gold. Liabilities saw a rise in notes and coin circulation and a decline in foreign loans, government deposits, and banks’ deposits.
