South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) hosted the Busan Financial Hub Convention on International Maritime Finance 2025 as the opening event of Busan Maritime Finance Week, bringing together public and private sector participants to discuss maritime finance trends and Busan’s development as a specialised maritime financial hub. In opening remarks, FSS Governor Lee Chanjin linked maritime finance to the industry’s transition toward carbon neutrality and pledged to expand productive finance to support the sector’s green transition while continuing to promote Busan as a financial hub city. The convention was held jointly with Busan Metropolitan City, the Busan Finance Center and the Marine Finance Center, with around 350 attendees at the opening ceremony under the theme “Busan, Where the Ocean Meets Capital–The Global Maritime Financial Hub.” The main session focused on “Busan, Global Hub of Maritime Capital: Future of Maritime Finance and Capital Markets” and included presentations on a Busan-tailored maritime financial hub model, global maritime financing market trends, the role of finance in developing Arctic shipping routes, Marine Finance Center financing programmes, Korea Exchange value-up support for shipbuilding and shipping, machine learning-based dry bulk freight rate forecasting, the role of private finance in maritime competitiveness and the impact of digital transformation on shipping and maritime industries. The FSS said it will continue to communicate and cooperate with relevant institutions to support Busan’s sustainable growth as a maritime finance-focused hub and to activate productive financing aimed at strengthening the financial foundation for regional economic development.
