Democrats on the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, led by Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren, released an analysis and held a 25 February 2025 investigation into what they describe as a Trump and Elon Musk effort to dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and weaken consumer protections. The analysis claims that, since the alleged attack on the CFPB began, the agency is processing 80% fewer consumer complaints, leaving thousands of consumers per day without assistance, and that 38 CFPB enforcement cases against large corporations are now frozen, potentially delaying millions in consumer remediation. Committee Democrats also highlighted the CFPB’s historic recoveries for consumers of more than USD 21 billion, including USD 363 million returned to service-members and veterans, and raised concerns about access to sensitive CFPB data and potential conflicts in light of Musk’s reported plans to launch a digital payments service within X.
