The National Bank of Moldova’s Governor, Anca Dragu, delivered a speech at the international “Ring the Bell for Gender Equality” event in Chișinău, focusing on the need for sustainable policies to reduce gender gaps and ensure equal access to economic and professional opportunities. She pointed to the central bank’s own workforce metrics as an example of an inclusive approach, with women representing 64% of employees and holding 53% of leadership positions. National Bank of Moldova data on financial services usage showed women hold more bank cards than men (1.9 million versus 1.6 million) and make more cashless payments (139,545,630 versus 134,070,937), but the value of women’s transactions is lower (MDL 82,947,988,045 versus MDL 85,846,407,403). Dragu linked these differences to factors including the gender pay gap in Moldova, cited as 16% on average, and noted financial independence as relevant to preventing economic violence. “Ring the Bell for Gender Equality” is a global initiative organised by UN Women, the World Federation of Exchanges, the International Finance Corporation, the Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative and the UN Global Compact, and this was its second edition in Moldova.
