The Malaysia Securities Commission, through its affiliate Capital Markets Malaysia, published the Sustainable Batik Disclosure Guide to help batik artisans, entrepreneurs and producers disclose environmental, social and governance data and practices. The tool was launched alongside the Securities Commission Malaysia’s Batik Lestari Festival, which focuses on building a more inclusive and sustainable marketplace, particularly for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. The guide sets out 34 priority ESG disclosures aligned with key local and international sustainability standards and is organised into Basic, Intermediate and Advanced levels. It builds on Capital Markets Malaysia’s 2023 Simplified ESG Disclosure Guide for SMEs in Supply Chains and includes sector-specific steps reflecting the batik industry’s practices, including traditional dyeing techniques, textile sourcing and community-based production. Separately, the Securities Commission Malaysia and the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding to run joint capacity building, sustainability, branding and promotional initiatives to support ESG-aligned practices and strengthen batik producers’ market competitiveness.
