The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) published its 2021–2022 Auto Insurance Database Report, presenting the latest compilation of US automobile insurance costs using data through year-end 2021 and 2022. The report also summarizes 2022 average expenditures and combined average premiums for each state. Key findings include a national combined average premium per issued vehicle of USD 1,258 in 2022, up 5.75% from 2021 to 2022. Total liability incurred losses were USD 103.8B in 2021, up 19.4% from 2020, and the average incurred loss per collision claim rose 18.6% from USD 5,185 in 2020 to over USD 6,150 in 2021. Over 2018–2022, liability premiums increased 8.61% while the number of insured vehicles grew 5.9%, and the national average expense per insured vehicle per year reached USD 1,126 in 2022, a 6.49% increase from 2018. The NAIC noted that direct state-by-state comparisons are difficult due to differences in underwriting costs, driving conditions, claim drivers such as theft and repair costs, and state insurance laws and coverage requirements, and that figures may differ from prior reports as insurer-submitted data are updated over time.
