The alert covers phishing instant messages linked to The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited and a fraudulent mobile application together with phishing instant messages linked to The Bank of New York Mellon. The HKMA reminded the public that banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to bank websites to carry out transactions, and will not ask for sensitive information such as login passwords or One-Time Passwords by phone, email or SMS, including via embedded hyperlinks. Individuals who provided personal information or conducted transactions in response to the scams were advised to contact the relevant bank using details in the corresponding bank press release and to report the matter to the Crime Wing Information Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force.
