The Central Bank of the Philippines published highlights from Governor Eli M. Remolona, Jr.’s remarks at the 5th BSP International Research Fair in Cebu, where he underscored the role of central bank research in navigating an increasingly fragmenting global economic environment. The event focused on how global fragmentation and structural transformation are creating new central banking challenges and called for work that can help update policy frameworks. Under the theme “From Pandemic and High Inflation to Global Fragmentation and Structural Transformation: New Central Banking Challenges,” discussions examined shifting trade dynamics, geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions, and stressed the need to refine analytical models. Participants were encouraged to look beyond traditional monetary policy and assess the soundness of unconventional tools in a more complex environment. The fair featured research from the BSP, the Bank for International Settlements, the International Monetary Fund, the Bank of Japan and other central banks, universities and multilateral institutions, with more than 100 central bankers, policymakers and academics in attendance.
