The Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) used a Radio One “Kumepambazuka” programme, reported to reach around two million Tanzanians nationwide, to explain how information and communication technology is being used to improve insurance service delivery and strengthen the security of Tanzania’s insurance market, including fully digital operation through the TIRAMIS and ORS platforms. TIRA outlined that the systems connect with other national databases and platforms, including those of the Police Force, the National Health Insurance Fund, LATRA, the Tanzania Revenue Authority, NIDA and BRELA, enabling insurance registration and verification services to be accessed remotely. It highlighted that TIRAMIS supports digital issuance and verification of insurance and is complemented by an Android application on Google Play that allows customers to confirm whether a vehicle has valid insurance. The authority also reiterated its consumer protection role in handling complaints and reminded listeners that operating a motor vehicle on the road without insurance is a legal offence. In addition, TIRA noted that following the passage of the Universal Health Insurance Act, it has been assigned a significant role in overseeing implementation in collaboration with health and insurance stakeholders, including educating the public on the importance of health insurance, registration steps and how to access services. TIRA indicated it will continue providing insurance education through multiple platforms to help consumers understand insurance and seek assistance when they face insurance-related challenges.
