The National Bank of Romania issued a public warning about online deepfake posts that impersonate governor Mugur Isărescu and seek to convince the public to make financial investments via a website promoted as an automated trading platform. It reiterated that the National Bank of Romania does not make investment recommendations or proposals. The content reportedly clones the website and a social media page of the newspaper Adevărul and presents a fabricated transcript of an alleged television interview appearance on “40 de întrebări cu Denise Rifai”. The release noted that, under a draft law on the responsible use of technology, a deepfake is falsified image, audio and or video content created using artificial intelligence to create the appearance that a person said or did things without their consent. The National Bank of Romania said its official online communications are limited to bnr.ro and its institutional accounts on LinkedIn, X, Instagram, Bluesky and YouTube. It advised anyone who has interacted with such materials or fake sites not to provide personal data and to report the incidents to the competent authorities, and pointed readers to further information on scam attempts conducted in its name and to online safety guidance from the National Cyber Security Directorate.
