The Pensions Superintendency (SIPEN) published an International Women’s Day feature on the role of women in the Dominican pension system, centred on Persia Álvarez, the country’s first pensions superintendent, and marking her career with a formal recognition event. The profile highlights Álvarez’s role in establishing SIPEN and building the supervisory approach for pension fund administrators (AFPs), including the development of the regulatory framework for investments and associated risk management, aligned with the mandate under Law 87-01 to protect affiliates and monitor AFP financial soundness. The special included a visit by Álvarez to SIPEN to receive a recognition from current superintendent Francisco A. Torres alongside members of her former team, and an interview in which she described progress in coverage, returns and efficiency while pointing to remaining coverage challenges for informal-sector workers.
